Fillipe Francis (center), first place hurdles winner from Westbury, poses with Legislator Corbin and Charles Nanton.

Nassau County Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) was on hand to congratulate the many local outstanding athletes who participated in the Derrick Adkins Holiday Classic. The event has become one of the premier amateur track and field tournaments in Nassau County, and this year was no different. More than 2,500 students from 45 high schools on Long Island competed in the event, which was held at the Mitchell Field Complex in Uniondale.

Derrick Adkins, an Olympic gold medal winner from Long Island, was once again the host and sponsor of the event. The Lakeview Youth Federation, which lies in Corbin's district, was also a major contributor to the event. The group encourages many underprivileged youths to use sports as a way to excel.
