I am not at all satisfied with what has been going on in the Westbury School District recently. Last month, the homeowners were advised that a vote was being held on a referendum to sell the BOCES property and take $300,000 off the tax rolls. Westbury has also lost over $500,000 with the sale of the King Kullen property.
When homeowners inquire about these events, we cannot get any answers. There was not even a polling place in Westbury to cast our votes. Needless to say, we were outvoted by more than two to one.
At a meeting at the Westbury Community Center, the vice president of the BOCES school board stated that the parking facilities were inappropriate for parking and that is why the Westbury location was not selected for voting. This allegation was false. We were not only told of this vote at the last minute, but an effort was made to disenfranchise the homeowners by forcing them to go to Carle Place to cast their votes.
We have businesses that claim a Westbury address, including B.J.'s, Westbury Music Fair, and Fortunoff's, but they do not pay our Westbury taxes. Now we have these efforts to increase homeowner's taxes. To make matters worse, we are paying these exorbitant taxes for a second-rate school system. If things do not change soon, Westbury will become a wasteland. The people of Westbury must wake up. On May 3, candidates for the school board were present at the Westbury High School to give their views on the school system. There were less than 50 persons in the audience. This was a deplorable showing. The auditorium should have been filled to capacity.
