Contrary to the opening in a letter to the editor published March 9, animals are a beloved part of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and live fulfilling lives. By showcasing animals' athletic and mental abilities, we help guests learn how people and animals can live together in partnership, and we are told time and time again that the experience is a key reason they attend our shows. The Ringling Bros. animals are cared for and trained under a comprehensive network of laws and regulations, and we are proud of our excellent record in animal care.
The writer seems to have formed an opinion based on information provided by professional advocates, lobbyists and campaigners - not animal experts. Contrast this with facts about the Ringling Bros. professionals who spend 365 days a year living and working with animals. All animal training and handling here is based on constant interaction, daily routines and nurturing that reinforces the trust and affection shared between the animals and people. Animals live and travel in facilities specifically designed for their comfort and safety, and they have time to exercise and socialize as well as perform.
Thousands of people saw our show in the New York metropolitan area when we performed there this spring, and they saw healthy animals working in partnership with humans. We enjoyed our visit to New York, and we look forward to visiting again next year.
