The Westbury Green Dragons boy's basketball team completed their best season for four years with a Nassau Class B Championship and an impressive 20-4 record. After capturing the Class B Championship vs. Glen Cove, the team fell to two formidable opponents: Hempstead in the Nassau Championship game two weeks ago, and Amityville in the Long Island Championship game held last Saturday at Nassau Community College.
Amityville led in this game 35-23 at halftime. However, Westbury came out strong for the beginning of the third quarter, highlighted by a majestic dunk by Chris Taylor midway through the period. Between some foul trouble and the outside shooting of Amityville's Billy Kretz, the Warriors pulled away late in the third quarter. They held on by a score of 68-59. Kretz led all scorers with 21 points. Danny Owusu led Westbury with 15 points and Taylor finished with 14.
Owusu, Taylor and Elvis Garcia were key contributors to Westbury's success throughout the season, with guard Richard Hall coming on strong down the stretch. Congratulations to the entire team and head Coach Dwight Gibson on an excellent season.
