On Thursday, March 16, North Hempstead Supervisor May Newburger honored this year's inductees into the Women's Roll of Honor at the Seventh Annual Women's History Breakfast. Twenty-one residents from nine different areas of the town were recognized for their achievements. Not one of these remarkable women was a resident of Westbury or New Cassel.

Why the oversight? When contacted the day before the event, Director of Public Affairs Joseph J. May explained that no woman from Westbury or New Cassel could be found who wished to accept the honor. We find this hard to believe. What worthy woman would reject recognition, if not for her own sake, then to further the causes she champions?

We have had the privilege of meeting many extraordinary women from the Westbury and New Cassel areas. Some are catalysts--they effect positive changes in their communities, and society at large. Others are philanthropists--they work tirelessly, often thanklessly to promote human welfare. All are strong, capable, courageous women. They are role models, an inspiration to both men and women, and should not go unrecognized.

We look forward to seeing their names on the Town of North Hempstead's Women's Roll of Honor next year.
