Over the years, we, the residents of Albany Ave. in Westbury, have seen many changes take place in our community, some negative and some positive. However, one thing we should all share is one common bond to preserve the neighborhood in which we reside and/or earn our living in. The relationship between businesses and residents should always be an open and communicative one. Without communication and respect, we can not coexist without problems. Especially since we, the residents, are the ones who suffer the consequences caused by thriving businesses in our area. Our local government should impose a mandatory agreement stating that our local businesses must respond to the concerns of the residents in a manor satisfactory to all involved.
However, all of the above does not exist here on Albany Ave. On numerous occasions, the residents of Albany Ave. have tried to negotiate solutions to some of our concerns with these businesses, only to be shot down with sarcastic and insulting remarks. They have said, "We pay more taxes than the entire blocks of Albany Ave., so we are therefore entitled to do whatever we please."
These business owners flatly refuse to respect us and address our concerns, sending a very clear message that their concern here in the community is only a financial one. Their attitude has forced us to now examine other options. We are now relying upon laws that govern our communities, our local politicians who we voted into office, and all our local municipalities to support, protect and serve us to the best of their abilities.
Yes, commercial congestion is causing serious quality of life concerns in our community, but all we are asking for is cooperation, consideration and respect. We are tired of paying the consequences for their business gains, without any regard for us, the residents.
We are now urging all our neighboring residents to also voice their opinions and hopefully, with unity, solidarity, and support, we can all make a difference.
