The Westbury Boys Varsity Basketball team enjoyed a stellar season, thanks to the dedication of coach Dwight Gibson, assistant coach Reginald Warren, and the consistent drive and enthusiasm of the team. By the conclusion of the annual Reid/Robeson Basketball Classic, held this year Feb. 5 at Westbury High School, the team had 13 victories and only two losses. In addition, one varsity team member, Jumar Gore, was recognized with the Reid/Robeson scholar athlete award along with Girl's Varsity team member Tanya Young.
Solid offensive plays were made throughout the season by senior Chris Taylor and Danny Owusu. What helped above all was teamwork. "I think their passing game is a big part of what helped the team this season," said Gibson. "They worked together, put a lot of effort into the game, and as a result they made some solid connections on the court."
The team faced a season that also required smart defense. Westbury Director of Athletics Stu Friedman explained that the season was designed to be motivating. League games leading toward championship rounds were interspersed with some very challenging non-league games. "We didn't want to make it too comfortable for the boys," said Friedman. "These are some exceptional athletes, and they benefit from a challenge."
