In a letter to his own editor, Joseph Pulitzer wrote, "... Every issue of the paper presents an opportunity and a duty to say something courageous and true." By submitting letters to the editor, readers of The Westbury Times have this opportunity, as well.
When writing, please keep these tips in mind:
Be concise. Express as much as possible in as few words as possible. Clarity and brevity are appreciated by readers and editors alike.
Don't rant and rave. Those you are attempting to persuade will respond better to rational arguments supported by facts and figures.
Be topical. Remember that The Westbury Times is a community newspaper, so send letters that are primarily of local interest.
Be legible. Use a computer or typewriter.
Remember, all letters must include your name, address and written signature and daytime phone number for verification.
Parents, teachers, community leaders, business owners, students, residents, seniors, anyone with an opinion, this is your paper, and no one knows the issues and points of interest of your community better than you do. Express yourself!
