The boys' varsity bowling team earned their first Nassau County Team Championship with a thrilling finish at Garden City Bowl which featured the top 16 boys' teams (out of 39 schools) in Section VIII.
The boys' varsity team finished their league season with an impressive 33-3 overall record. Coach Ralph Capozzi had seven bowlers finish the season with a 197 average or better. Senior Tim Yadeska finished with a team high 211 average, followed by juniors Chris Bilbao (208) and Vinny Capozzi (207), senior Frank Amodeo (205), and junior L. J. Lopez (204). Four other bowlers averaged over 190 which provided Coach Capozzi with a lot of depth going into the County Team Championships. Vinny Capozzi recorded the team's season high game with a 278 and Frankie Amodeo had a 277 game. L. J. Lopez bowled a season high 727 (242.3 average) three-game series.
Carle Place was expected to finish in the top three or four places but the overall County championship could have been any one of a half of dozen schools, to include the eventual second place finisher Plainview JFK, the third place East Meadow team, or other solid teams like North Shore, Syosset, Hicksville, Hewlett, or Massapequa who all finished in the top eight places. The tournament was loaded with excitement from start to finish. Carle Place got a huge boost from junior Kyle Lavery who finished second in the entire county with a 228 average for six games, including an impressive 267 high game. Lavery finished with a six game series of 1372, just 15 pins short of the top score in the county. Capozzi also had a solid performance with a 1260 six-game series (210 average) and Yadeska finished with a 1221 series (204 average). Lopez provided the team with some needed help as he bowled a 214 and 201 during the all-important fifth and sixth games of the county tournament.
The stage was set for the most exciting finish in the history of the Nassau County Boys' Bowling Team Championships. Carle Place had a comfortable, but fragile lead as they entered their sixth and final match against Plainview JFK. The last match featured Greg Nizewitz from Plainview JFK, who was just coming off a perfect 300 game, against the Frogs' senior captain Yadeska. As their match came to the final frame, the County Championship was still very much in doubt. The momentum had clearly shifted to Plainview JFK's side. In the 10th and final frame, Yadeska managed to pick up a 10-pin spare to hold off the charge from Nizewitz and his Plainview JFK teammates. The final score: Carle Place 6,076 - Plainview JFK 6,064.
The celebration began for the Frogs and Coach Capozzi who could hardly hold back his emotions. He was very proud of his team as they accomplished something that no other Carle Place bowling team had ever done before. Coach Capozzi would also like to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the other varsity bowlers namely Jim Amodeo, Ken Barnett, Sean Marshall, and Jonathan Wicks. Carle Place's J. V. team posted a near perfect 35-1 season record as well. Congratulations to all the members of the Frogs' Varsity Boys' Bowling Team.
Four bowlers will receive All-County honors to include Capozzi, Amodeo, Lavery, and Yadeska at the annual awards banquet held at Verdi's in Westbury.
