Carle Place High School's Ryan Shanahan, a member of the class of 2000, has been selected as the recipient of an EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athlete Award/ News 12's sports reporter Carl Reuter recently visited Carle Place High School and filmed Ryan at work in the classroom and in many of his extra-curricular activities.

Ryan Shanahan holds his EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athlete Award. Carle Place High School has had more EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athletes than any other public, private, and/or parochial high school in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Shanahan is a remarkable scholar-athlete who has accomplished many goals during his career at Carle Place Middle/High School. He is currently ranked 11 in a class of 116 students, with a weighted GPA of 98.419, which equates to a 95 unweighted GPA. Shanahan has a combined SAT score of 1380 and is a member of the school's National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. In addition, he is vice president of the student organizations, sports editor for The Crossroads (school newspaper), a captain of his Mock Trial Team, a member of the Key Club, as well as a key member of the school's band (saxophone) and the Ensemble Singers.

Shanahan has earned numerous awards for his contributions to the school's music department. He has participated in five of the school's musical productions and has had major lead roles in Carousel, Anything Goes, Bye Bye Birdie, and this year's production of My Fair Lady, which will be presented March 30, 31, and April 1. Shanahan was a recipient of All-New York State honors in last year's NYSSMA competition, as well as being recognized as All-County in music for the past five years. He received the Outstanding Vocalist Award at Chicago's Music Festival in 1998 and an Honorable-Mention Vocal Award at San Francisco's Music Festival in the spring of '97. On stage, Shanahan possesses an amazing talent and has delighted audiences who have attended musicals, concerts, and other special events held by Carle Place High School's Music Department.

As a tennis player, Shanahan plays 1st singles on the varsity team and has been recognized as an All-Division and All-Conference Player for the past two seasons. As a center on the school's N.Y.S. Semi-Finalist basketball team he led the team to an 18-6 final record during his junior year and was voted All-Conference. He led last year's team in rebounding, scoring, field goal percentage, blocked shots, and taking offensive charges. He scored 370 points, averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game during his junior year. Thus far, Shanahan is averaging 20 points and 16.5 rebounds per game in his senior year. He has been voted four times to All-Tournament Teams and this year was the Most Valuable Player of the first Coaches vs. Cancer Classic held at Herricks High School. The team currently has an 8-1 overall record and Shanahan has been a big part of the success of the team.

Shanahan exemplifies every aspect of the EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athlete Award. He possesses a superb work ethic and a competitive spirit. He is a scholar and a gentleman. Carle Place High School has more EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athletes than any other public, private, and/or parochial high school in either Nassau or Suffolk Counties.
