Neighborhood House in Westbury was the scene of much holiday cheer Dec. 23, as volunteers from the Westbury Neighborhood Association, Inc. gave away hundreds of new and "gently used" toys to needy families. Children, accompanied by their parents, descended on the house in droves, and no one went away empty-handed.
"The bounty of new and used toys donated by individuals and companies in the community was overwhelming," said Ruth Pellegrino, C.S.W., director of social services. Long Island Cablevision, Boy Scout Pack 469, and students from Cherry Lane School and Carle Place High School all contributed generously to the cause.
Neighborhood House is a private, non-profit organization maintained by approximately 30 volunteers. It was founded in 1916 by community-minded women to provide a public health center. Today, Neighborhood House services the villages of Westbury and Old Westbury, Carle Place and New Cassel with support from volunteer contributions. Services they provide are food and clothing for needy families, emergency help for families in crisis, and counseling and assistance by certified social workers.
