Westbury High School's First Fall Sports Award Night was part of a design by Stuart Friedman to pay homage to student athletes after the end of each season rather than at the end of the school year. Friedman, district director of athletics for Westbury schools, was optimistic about the effect the event would have for the student athletes. "I thought that if we have awards nights at the end of the fall, winter and spring seasons, the students would enjoy it better than waiting until the end of the year to be recognized," said Friedman.
Student athletes, family and friends enjoyed honoring the fall season team players. Among the teams highlighted during the evening were Varsity and Junior Varsity Football, Girls Tennis, Junior Varsity Girls Soccer, Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, and Cheerleading. Some members of the Boys Soccer Team were awarded on the same evening at the All County Soccer Dinner, held at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. Awards at Fall Sports Night were given for most valuable players, most improved players, and players with the most team spirit. In addition, student athletes were honored by the County Association and the Officials' Association.
The newly formed Junior Varsity Girls Soccer team, the Westbury Lady Dragons, was commended for a job well done. The girls proudly donned their green sports jackets, which read, "Let the Dynasty Begin." One special award went to MVP offense Joanne Carelus, a freshman who scored an impressive 14 goals during the season. Other awards went to MVP defense Alishia Miller, most improved offense Julia Amaya, and most improved defense Tamieka Lovell. When asked to speak on behalf of her team, junior Tanya Oberoi said, "We enjoyed a lot of team spirit and a great turn-out this season." Coach Samantha Gerber and Assistant Coach Rachel Green agreed. "Coach Gerber and I feel privileged to have worked with 18 very dedicated athletes this season, many of whom were playing the game for the first time," said Miss Green. "They were unified like sisters, like a team should be."
