The pathetic lack of a current teacher contract in the East Meadow School District has prompted me to write this letter.
My family moved from Queens to East Meadow in February, 1956. The house was brand new. The school that I was to attend was brand new. The members of the community had come largely from city areas seeking a better way of life for their families. The school system offered a great part of that. I'll call this time the "glory days" of East Meadow.
My education was enhanced many-fold. Cutting edge programs not experienced in my former educational setting were now the routine.
The greatest gift I received was my introduction to music in the public schools. I began the study of the violin and participated in orchestras and performances locally and county and statewide as well. Through the efforts of the very capable and nurturing faculty, I was encouraged and ultimately went on to love the craft enough to want to give back to children the positive experience I had cherished. In college, I majored in music education and went on to receive scholarships for study in several universities. After teaching in other districts in Nassau County, I took time off to start a family.
Eleven years ago, I was given the opportunity to return to teach in the district where I had gotten my start. I was coming full circle. I was to return to the place where my life was changed so specially by caring educational professionals. Unfortunately, since I have been back, my colleagues and I have experienced three extremely negative contract situations.
I thank my former teachers every time I take out my instrument to play in orchestra, ensemble, or just for my own personal joy. I thank them every time I start a new student and guide them through their musical education.
It is time for the board of education to validate and thank the consummate professional teachers in the district by honoring them with a fair contract.
Bring back the "glory days" of East Meadow!
