Obituaries
Phoebe Diller, 77, of Westbury, died on Nov. 17, 1999. She was born in Far Rockaway and graduated from Queens College. She earned her master's degree in music from Harvard University. She was a pianist and arranger and began teaching music at Bowling Green Elementary School and gave private lessons. She taught at C.W. Post Campus of LIU where she learned to play the mandola. She joined the LI Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra. She wrote a musical education book called Let's Have a Muiscal Rhythm Band. A concert was scheduled for Dec. 15 at Bowling Green Elementary School and the school has renamed the annual chorus award in her name. She is survived by daughter Marsha Kushin; sister Jocelyn Schuman; brother William Collins; and her niece Mindy Aleman. A scholarship is being set up in her honor for disadvantaged students who want to pursue music education at a music school or camp. Contributions can be made to the Phoebe Diller Scholarship Fund, Bowling Green Elementary School, 2340 Stewart Ave., Westbury, NY 11590. Interment Beth David Cemetery. Joseph H. Paternoster, formerly of Westbury, died on Nov. 21, 1999. Husband of Gertrude. Father of Dennis, Douglas and Deborah. Grandfather of seven. Great-grandfather of three. Brother of Isidore, Guido, Jack and Benjamin. Arrangements were made by the Cecere Funeral Home, Carle Place. Funeral service. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.
