  • NEWS: Westbury Fire Department Honors 51-Year Member

    In memory of Frank S. Nicoll, the Westbury Fire Department recently donated $2,500 to the F.A.S.N.Y. Firemen's Home in Hudson, NY. In addition to serving as the Firemen's Home's president of the board from 1981 to 1982, Nicoll was an active member of the Westbury Fire Department for 51 years. The donation will be used to renovate and improve the Nassau Room at the Home, in which a bronze plaque dedicated by the Westbury Fire Department in Nicoll's honor will be on permanent display.   • NEWS: Community Halts Roosevelt Raceway Implosion

    A coalition of local residents, civic leaders, commercial and retail business owners, and elected officials declared victory at a press conference held Nov. 5, in preventing developer Allen Silverman from imploding the Roosevelt Raceway grandstand. The conference, called by Gary Lewi, a representative of Fortunoff's Chief Operating Officer Norman Goldberg, gave interested parties an opportunity to voice environmental, health and quality of life concerns regarding the proposed implosion, which would have occurred the day after Thanksgiving.   • SPORTS: Westbury Student Captures Title in Foot Locker Championships

    Danielle Jelley, a senior at W.T. Clarke High School in Westbury placed second in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) Northeast Regional at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx Nov. 27. Jelley, a 1997 FLCCC National Finalist, finished in 18:12. She placed seventh in the 1997 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Northeast Regional. FULL STORY
