In the second year that the school has participated in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick Program, Barnum Woods Elementary School of the East Meadow District has placed exceptionally well in the tournament. The competition scored each individual in three different skill areas and ranked the overall outcome. Winners entered local and regional competitions and the finalists were offered a chance to go to the state finals held during a New York Jets game.
This year from Barnum Woods four students placed in the sectional championships held at Baldwin High School. Fourth graders Julianne Mongillo and George Heinsman took first and third places respectively in their divisions. Fifth grade student Olivia Silvestri placed second in her division while her classmate Andrew Rubenau also had an excellent day in the competition. Each student received prizes for their individual competitions. "All of the students did their best to play well and to represent their school," said Barnum Woods physical education instructor Don Whearty, the coordinator of the elementary school's competition.
Based on her first place ranking, Julianne Mongillo will go on to the state finals at Giants Stadium Nov. 7.
