A memorial service for Alberta Tichy and Edward Tichy will be held Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Westbury African Episcopal Zion Church, 274 Grand Blvd., Westbury, Rev. Dr. Cynthia Willis Stewart, Pastor.
Mrs. Alberta Jackson Tichy was born in Jericho, July 24, 1906 and left this earthly domain March 26, 1997.
Alberta was the 11th child born to Florence and Alfred Jackson. She had a very interesting and exciting life. She was multi-talented. She graduated from Harlem Hospital School of Nurses "Class of 1927." In the Harlem Memories Senior Class of 1927 Harlem Training School, Alberta was known as "the Spark Plug" and she was lovingly known as "Jackie." She was quoted as saying, " No matter how long I live, there will never be time to worry."
Miss Jackson began her studies in piano and theory at the Henry Street School Settlement. After many concert appearances, Miss Jackson ventured into the field of opera, singing the role of Flora in Verdi's La Traviata at Carnegie Hall. She also was a member of the National Negro Opera Co., Inc., a company to which Mrs. McCleod Bethune was vice president.
William Jageler, 85, of Hampton, VA, formerly of Westbury, died on Oct. 25, 1999. He was born and raised in Queens and studied medical engineering at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He served in the 716th Military Police Battalion during WWII and he accompanied prisoners of war on trains transporting them to work as farm hands. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant and received a WWII Victory Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. After the war, he operated his own trucking company and as a chief draftsman for Radiation Dynamics in Melville. He was a member of American Legion Post #1718. Husband of the late Eleanor. Father of Marie Van Raam and Anne Macheski. Father-in-law of Mark Van Raam and Bill Macheski. Grandfather of 11. Interment Hampton National Cemetery.
