Mary B. Rutter, 91, of Lexington, MA and Belgrade Lakes, ME, died Aug. 26, 1999 at Emerson Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dr. T. Edward Rutter. Born in Westbury on Jan. 5, 1908, she was the youngest daughter of the late S. Marvin Barley and Anna Louise Gish Barley and sister of the late Russell Barley. She graduated from Goucher College, Phi Beta Kappa in 1929. She taught French and Latin in Westbury High School. Mary cared deeply about her family, her religion, education and the plight of those less fortunate than herself. Her hobbies included reading, cooking and antiquing, and anything to do with her beloved Maine.
Prior to moving to Lexington in 1989, she and her husband enjoyed 17 years of retirement in Farmington, CT. They also lived in Arlington, VA, Radnor, PA and Cleveland, OH. The one constant place in their lives was their summer home on Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes, ME, to which they returned every summer for 64 years.
Mary is survived by her two daughters, Susan Laurenson of Laguna Beach, CA and Marcia Cook of Concord, MA; her first born daughter, Alice Louise, died at the age of three; five grandchildren, Marcia Lassila of Lexington, MA, Ed Laurenson of Trinidad, CA, Melissa Cook of Millers Falls, MA, Amy Cook-Wright of Montego Bay, Jamaica and Mike Cook of Concord; and two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Neva of Millers Falls.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held next summer in Belgrade Lakes. She will be remembered always by those who knew her for her inquisitive mind, her high ideals, her kindness and generosity of spirit and her very gentle soul. Emelyn (Jeri) Jagels, of Westbury, died Sept. 10, 1999. Wife of the late Frederick. Mother of Rick, Laurel and Christine. Grandmother of Eric, Dina and Evan. A memorial service will be held Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. at the Ethical Humanist Society, Old Country Rd., Garden City, NY.
