Concerns Linger Over East Meadow Library Expansion
Community leaders voiced concerns about "the process, not the project" at a meeting held last week to discuss the proposed expansion of the East Meadow Library. The meeting, held at the request of East Meadow Civic and Community Service Association President Robert Zafonte, gave library board members and others involved in the project the opportunity to address their concerns.

North Hempstead Cancels Referendum Plan
A scheduled vote on a planned environmental referendum was canceled shortly before last Tuesday's North Hempstead Town Board meeting. Supervisor May Newburger professed herself to be disappointed that the vote did not take place but said she had been convinced by her staff that more work had to be done in informing local civic groups as to the purpose of the referendum. It was also clear that the two Republican members of the board were going to make a political issue of the proposal. Late on the previous day Councilmen Angelo Ferrara and James O'Connor issued a press release calling the plan "dangerous and illegal."

Long Island Girls Bring Home the Gold
Girls from the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in East Hills took the gold medal in the 1999 JCC Maccabi Games held at Katz Community Center in Cherry Hill, N.J. The games are an international Olympic-like event with over 1,500 athletes, ranging from ages 13 to 16 years of age, from all over the country. Great Britain, Canada and Israel were also represented.

Special Olympics Athletes to Compete at Cantiague Park
Over 500 athletes will assemble at Hicksville's Cantiague Park on Saturday, Sept. 18 for the 1999 New York Special Olympics Fall Classic. New York Special Olympics athletes will be going for the gold in soccer, softball and golf skills and team competitions as well as cross country running in this primer to the State Fall Games in Binghampton on Oct. 1 - 2.
