I have taught in the Carle Place schools for almost 20 years, and never have I been more proud of the students in the district as I was last Tuesday night at the board of education meeting. Despite the 100 degree temperature, many of these young people came to voice their support for a guidance counselor who is being unjustly terminated. The students were well-spoken, sincere and appropriate in all respects. Would that the adults involved in the termination were also as engaged; unfortunately, they were absent or silent. What lessons will be learned by these beautiful children? Can one voice his or her opinions, supported by facts, and be heard? Does participating in a public forum make a difference? If not, America has changed for the worse, and there has been a loss of liberty.
