In years past, this spot in the newspaper was usually occupied by an editorial, sometimes a lengthy one, other times not. For those of you who enjoyed flipping to this page to read the editor's opinion (whether or not you agreed with it), I want to explain why I've been so silent.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, spent a few years in the Mid-Hudson Valley, and a couple of years in Florida. Long Island and Westbury are still relatively new to me. I believe as an editor and a voice in the community I should not offer up opinions conceived without knowing not only the facts, but the history behind local issues and the people involved. To do so would be unfair to the readers and the communities I cover.
Don't take my quiet stance as a lack of concern or a sign of apathy. I have grown to appreciate and respect the communities of Westbury and surrounding areas very much. And it is with respect for my readers, quite a few of whom have been here longer than I have known how to read or write, that I don't crank out opinions before giving myself time to really know and understand the communities I cover.
Meanwhile, I encourage residents to write me with their ideas, comments and opinions. Reader input makes the newspaper stronger and more reflective of what residents truly think is important. I look forward to hearing from you.
