Rushmore Elementary School held its annual Field Day on May 24. Long awaited and much anticipated by the students the day fulfilled all expectations. Even though the gray sky hung heavy, the students were carefree and enjoyed every minute of activity. Each class outdid themselves on their original class banners. They were more creative and artistic than ever. With the students in their color-coordinated T-shirts it was a close tie to "Opening Ceremonies" at the Olympics. The students' athletic skills were put to the test as a wide variety of challenging events filled the morning's schedule. The students could have moved a lot faster in the potato sack relay but their laughing slowed them down just a bit. A favorite event and always a big hit is the soccer punt for distance.
An excellent force of parent volunteers manned the refreshment tables slicing away at record speed oranges and watermelons. Also included in the morning's events was the baton pass relay and the hula hoop body pass. What would a field day be without a good old tug-of-war. Just when the last event was about to be finished a few raindrops could be felt. It was a race walk back to Rushmore as the final event.
