The Town of North Hempstead Parks & Recreation Department and New Hyde Park Lions Club recently co-sponsored the 7th Annual Thomas J. Aliberti Memorial Swim Meet at the Clinton G. Martin pool. Young swimmers competed throughout the evening in several different heats and were awarded with medals for their achievements.

In attendance at the swim meet were Supervisor May W. Newburger, Town Councilman Anthony D'Urso and Town Councilwoman Doreen Banks. "I applaud the dedication and spirit of these young swimmers and salute the help and support given to them by their families and friends," said Newburger.

North Hempstead Parks Commissioner Gerard Olsen and Parks Recreation Supervisor Raymond Cross helped to coordinate and supervise the event that was held on March 6. "Each year we look forward to this event and each year the participants really enjoy themselves," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Gerard Olsen.

Members of the New Hyde Park Lions Club, a co-sponsor of the swim meet, took great pride in dedicating this Annual Swim Meet as a memorial to Thomas J. Aliberti. As a tribute to Thomas J. Aliberti, the Lions Club has held this swim meet in his honor since 1993.

Thomas Aliberti was born in 1969 and began swimming at the Clinton G. Martin pool when he was 7 years old. He swam in North Hemsptead Town meets for 10 years. It did not take long for Thomas to win Most All-Around Swimmer, Most Valued Swimmer and Most Dedicated Swimmer at the town pool. In 1989-1991 he was captain of the swim team and a graduate of Emory University. In August of 1991, Thomas Joseph Aliberti died suddenly.
