December 3 The Book of Ruth

The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton will be discussed. In this novel exploring family ties and stresses, a poor Midwestern woman and her husband are struggling to define themselves as individuals and as a loving, sexual couple while under the opressive thumb of the young wife's mother.

Children's Book Week

On Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. join children's folksinger George Gaines Swanson in the WF Lollis Meeting Room. A banjo folksinger from an island in Maine, Swanson will sing, lead sing-a-longs and share little stories about our familiar folk songs. He has performed across the US as well as in Europe and Africa. Children will be able to try the banjo and spoons, an old American folk instrument. No registration is necessary.

World AIDS Day December 1

Through the AIDS Collective of Long Island, sections of the AIDS memorial quilt will be on display in the library meeting room. The AIDS Collecive is an all-volunteer community based organization formed to help Long Islander remember their lost loved ones.

Wednesday, November 12

AARP Meeting

An important free seminar entitled "Everything You Should Know and Need to Know About Hospice and Hospice Care" by Hospice Care of Long Island. Get the answers to these typical questions: What is Hospice? What is Hospice Care? What are all the services Hospice offers? New members welcome. Refreshments served. The program will take place at 10 a.m. at the Chas. F. Fuschillo Park's large meeting hall at Carle Road and Broadmoor Lane.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking enthusiasts will want to come to the East Meadow Public Library on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. to meet Michael Margulis, author of Mountain Biking: New York. No tickets are needed and admission is free. Margulis, who grew up in East Meadow, is a veteran mountain biker and will talk about the joys of escaping the pressure and stress of daily life by discovering nature in the myriad of trails that are available in New York. He'll discuss trips and trails close to home on Long Island as well as the beautiful areas north of the region. The library is located at 1886 Front St., East Meadow.

Annual Bazaar

Community Reform Temple, 712 The Plain Road in Westbury, is holding its annual vendors fair and bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 7-11 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 34 p.m. CRT's bazaar will consist of merchandise being sold by area vendors and merchandise being sold by Community Reform Temple. Book Signing

Noted author and journalist Kieran Crowley will be at Barnes & Noble, 91 Old Country Rd., Carle Place, on Nov. 18 to sign copies of his new book Sleep My Little Dead about the infamous Zodiac killer. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, November 19

Women and the Law

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the League of Women Voters of Hempstead East will host a discussion on "Women and the Law." Do gender-neutral laws result in fair treatment for women? What is the effect of sexual harassment in the legal field? The meeting will be at the Merrick Library, Merrick Ave., Merrick at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, December 9

Bus Trip

The East Meadow Public Library has scheduled a bus trip on Tuesday, Dec. 9 to Northlandz, the home of the Great American Railway in Flemington, NJ. It features the greatest collection of indoor miniature trains, mountains, bridges and handcrafted buildings as well as the La Peep Dollhouse, a 94-room mansion with an indoor swimming pool. Lunch will be at the historic Union Hotel. The cost for the trip is $44.25. Tickets are available at the library, 1886 Front St., East Meadow.

Vendors Wanted

Vendors are wanted for the East Meadow Jewish Center's bazaar on Dec. 13 from 7:30-11 p.m. and Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. $50 per day, $75 for two days. Contact the east Meadow Jewish Center at 483-4205.

Ongoing Events

At Hempstead General Hospital

New Beginnings, for individuals past the initial stages of grief. Alzheimer Family Support group, meets every second and fourth Wednesday. The next meeting is Wednesday, Nov. 12. Heart Club meets the third Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m. in the board room. The next meeting will be Nov. 19. For information on any of these groups call Winnie Hughes at 560-1231. Islamic Center

Free Tajweed and Quraanic Recitation classes for adults and children are given at the Islamic Center of Long Island, 835 Brush Hollow Road in Westbury, every Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. The lessons are given in the upper back area of the Masjid (Mosque).

Free Health Consultations

The Islamic Center of Long Island is inviting all neighbors who need to consult with a doctor to visit on any Sunday, between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A doctor will be available for consultation purposes only. All are welcome.

Cancer Support Group

The cancer support group meets monthly and focuses on developing skills for coping and creates a support system for those facing the challenges of cancer. The group is professionally facilitated by a cancer survivor who is available during the month to encourage those in need of additional support. The group will meet in the Emma S. Clark Library from 7 to 9 p.m. in the community room on the first Tuesday of every month. The group will meet on the following dates in 1997: Oct. 7; Nov. 4; Dec. 2. The group is free and open to all whose lives have been touched by cancer. For information call 689-5904.
