Annual Dinner/Fashion Show Presented By The Maria SS. Dell’Assunta Society

Join up for a fun filled evening on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. for the Annual Dinner/Fashion Show. Nassau County Historical Society Meeting

Ray Lumpp “Memories of the 1948 Olympics” meeting at 2 p.m at The Community Church Of East Williston, 45 East Williston (Hillside) Ave., East Williston. At the 1948 Olympics in London, Long islander Ray Lumpp played on the U.S. basketball team, which won all eight of its games and an Olympic gold medal. The 2012 coach invited Ray back this year to London to see this year’s Olympics. Ray Lumpp was athletic director of the NYAC, which produced 230 Olympic medal winners - more than any other athletic club in the world. He will share his memories with us. Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Start time is 8 a.m. Begins at Jones Beach and ends at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Teams must register online at www.glirc.org. Hicks Nurseries Fall Festival

Hicks Nurseries is offering fun activities for families from September 15 through October 31. Hicks Nurseries, Long Island’s largest garden nursery (established by the Hicks family in 1853), is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. •Otto the Ghost returns in the free animated story “Otto’s Crows Woes” where Otto aids his friends the scarecrow and the witch in saving their fall harvest of corn and pumpkins from the hungry crows. Glowing scenes and special effects make the show visually exciting and visitors are asked to be helpful like Otto by donating non perishable food items to support the efforts of Long Island Cares.

•The weekends are packed with activities that include real live farm animals to visit (free) plus Otto’s Hay Ride and homemade fudge, fresh cider and roasted corn. To decorate the home there will be hay bales, corn stalks, gourds and lots of pumpkins for sale.

•Decorate Otto’s Krispie House. Children are invited to turn a house made out of rice krispies into a home for Otto the Ghost. Hicks will supply the house and all of the candy and icing. The house, which measures 7 inches by 8 inches, is edible. On Oct. 23, 24 and 25 at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $12 plus tax per child. 


•Children’s Pumpkin Decorating Workshop. Children are invited to decorate a pumpkin for Halloween with paints and other fall-themed accessories, all supplied by the nursery. On Oct. 16, 17 and 18 at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $8 plus tax per child.

•The store is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Fridays.

St. Brigid’s Attic Thrift Shop

The Attic Thrift Shop (178 Post Ave., Westbury), which helps to support St. Brigid’s Outreach Program, is seeking donations of gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and children. Donations of household items including bedding, cookware, dishes, flatware, lamps, pictures, decorative household items and bric-a-brac also accepted. Only small furniture items can be accepted. Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc....it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
