I enjoyed your article “Through Tim, All Things Are Possible” because you are one of the few scribes that seem to recognize that not only Mark Sanchez but also Tim Tebow has another year of maturity in their early NFL career.

In reality, Mark has had three and a half training camps with his coaches and Tim had only half a training camp with his Broncos’ coaches and that as the third-stringer!

Everyone forgets that when Tim entered the Oct. 9, 2011 San Diego game at halftime, he likely had never taken a snap with the Fox-coached Broncos’ first-team even in practice! Additionally, everyone forgets that that very day he was only one dropped pass with one second left in the game from completing his first football miracle! And, no one remembers that John Elway celebrated the occasion by trading away Brandon Lloyd, the best receiver on the Broncos, Oct. 17, 2011 before the next Bronco game.

I would suggest that at that time King John was intent on winning the Andrew Luck sweepstakes (Stanford was also John’s alma mater) and while pleasing the fans, Tim did not please the one fan that mattered … the GM!

I’m no judge of football talent but I’m quite sure that after Josh the deposed was through with the Broncos, the collective skill set was not even in the same league as the Jets. Yes, Tim ran the ball and ran it and ran it. But, I would make the case that if ever a player put the team on his back and carried it, that player was Tim Tebow in 2011.

Talk about handicapping a quarterback … my 5-year-old grandchild pointed out the Broncos’ tendency to run on first down. I broke down the Steelers playoff game. It was 24:2 running to passing on first down in regulation! No wonder the Steelers never even considered the possibility of pass on the first play of OT! What NFL team would try and “out Fox” their opponent with such predictability and such weak run personnel to support the quarterback!

If this is any indication of potential NFL talent, the three years that Tim Tebow was the starter at Florida he passed for 8,927 yards and ran for an additional 2,478. His counterpart John Elway in his three years as starter at Stanford passed for 8,805 yards and lost 246 running! I believe that John Elway matured into an ok quarterback and the odds are that Tim Tebow will also, despite every sports talking head today trying to compare the near rookie with veterans Rodgers, Brady, the Mannings, et al.

I’ve been a Broncos fan since the ’70s but I think that Rex got the better of King John on this deal. I can hardly wait for the coming game when Timmy soundly defeats the King and announces to him that he’d like to take him up on that marry his daughter comment he made when announcing that trade to the Jets.

Neighborhood Watch Keeps An Eye Out

Everyone wants to know that their neighborhood is safe. But an omnipresent police force is impossible and extensive home security can be expensive. So the watchful eye of a neighbor can come in handy.

Now in its second year, the Westbury Neighborhood Watch is a small group of residents who stick to the phrase “see something, say something.” Director Jacquelyn McCullough says that the group, comprised mostly of seniors, keeps an eye out for suspicious behavior and looks out for their neighbors. She encourages them to report any odd behavior to her, so she can relay it to the appropriate authorities.

Deidree Golbourne has been running track and field all four years she has been at Westbury High School. Her passion for the sport comes from knowing that “you can put your all into it. It’s not a team sport where you have to depend on other people. You get out as much as you put into it.”

Golbourne is also seeded fourth in the state for discus throwing. She says that when she initially picked up discus her freshman year, she wasn’t a fan.

The U.S. Tennis Association Eastern Long Island Region recently honored Westbury resident Susan Alvy at a celebratory dinner, presenting her with the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award for her longtime commitment to tennis. The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury hosted the 23rd annual awards dinner, which honors tennis champions from Nassau and Suffolk County.
