The SUNY College at Old Westbury announced the appointment of Lenore Walsh as Director of Athletics. Walsh brings to Old Westbury more than a decade and a half of athletic administration experience from New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), New York Athletic Conference, Dowling College and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Walsh will begin her work at Old Westbury July 23.
Walsh spent 13 years as Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator at NYIT, where she assisted the Director of Athletics in overseeing the staff and coaches for the 11 intercollegiate NCAA Division II programs sponsoring Division I baseball. An example of Walsh’s major accomplishments at NYIT was the implementation of the B.E.A.R. (Bear Education Athletic Retention) academic support program which provided increased academic support to identified student-athletes to improve their retention and graduation rates. She was responsible for maintaining and overseeing the athletic budgets and athletic scholarships, monitoring academic progress for all student-athletes while serving as scheduling and travel coordinator, CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor. Walsh was also a member of the NYIT Disciplinary Review Board, Student Affairs Board, Health Services Review Committee, Alcohol Task Force and Emergency Protocols Committee.
Prior to NYIT, Walsh was the director of marketing and promotions for the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference for three years and event management coordinator at Dowling College for two years. She launched her career as an Asa S. Bushnell Intern with the ECAC in 1996. The Asa S. Bushnell Internship Program geared Walsh with a diverse experience in athletics administration as well as a strong foundation for a career in athletics where she was involved in the administration of various ECAC programs and services to include championships, communications, leagues/affiliates and marketing.
Walsh is a native of Stony Brook, graduating from Ward Melville High School, where she lettered in swimming and lacrosse. A 1996 graduate of Providence College with a bachelor’s degree in marketing with enhanced studies in sport management, Walsh earned a master’s degree in business administration-general management from Dowling College in 1999.
Walsh currently resides in Franklin Square.

The Community Emergency Response Team program helps individuals prepare for emergencies—large-scale ones like Superstorm Sandy and smaller ones like minor fires. The program’s new classes start in June.
Team Director Michael Arcari said the sessions help people know what is needed in an emergency situation and how they can help others. It also provides knowledge on how to assist first responders and groups like the Red Cross.

Doug Ingram was recently named the new chief of the Westbury Fire Department.
Ingram grew up in Old Westbury and graduated from Westbury High School in 1974. After graduating, he joined the Navy where he spent two years stationed in Italy. When he was honorably discharged in 1979, he joined the Westbury fire department and has been involved there ever since.

Westbury Okinawan Karate recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of coming to the Westbury Recreation Center. Since then, the dojo has trained 250 students, ages six and up, in the art of karate with the style of traditional Okinawan ShorinRyu Shidokan.
Founded by sensei John Power, the classes seek to instill the confidence and strength needed to obtain success in everyday life.
“A lot of kids are lacking confidence,” said Power. “We let them practice leadership in the class and this contributes to their confidence.
