Polo Match Raises Funds To Support SUNY College At Old Westbury

The Old Westbury College Foundation, Inc. recently welcomed more than 800 alumni and friends recently to celebrate the 11th Annual Summer Polo Match and Lawn Party to support SUNY College at Old Westbury.

The championship polo event was a fundraiser to support academic and programmatic enhancements at the college, while also honoring those who advocate for the preservation of Long Island’s open spaces. The event, which featured a match provided by the historic Meadowbrook Polo Club in the surroundings of Hickox Field in Old Westbury, grossed more than $80,000 in support of the foundation.

“The grand success of this event serves as evidence that the Long Island community is responding to the efforts being made by the Old Westbury College Foundation to support the mission of SUNY College at Old Westbury,” said College President Calvin O. Butts, III. “We were proud to welcome so many friends and alumni of the college. At the same time, we were pleased to be able to honor the good works of our honorees, Ms. Katie Kilcommons-McGowan and Ms. Mary D’Antonio.”

Ms. Kilcommons-McGowan was awarded the Ed Wrigley Horsemanship Award in recognition of her work as the founder and executive director of HorseAbility, a not-for-profit organization that offers therapeutic riding and other services for children and families with special needs. Ms. D’Antonio, a 1994 graduate, was recognized with the Alumni Leadership Award for her 13 years of service as president of the SUNY College at Old Westbury Alumni Association and her ongoing commitment to the college’s success.

The college and College Foundation offer special thanks to the 2012 Presenting sponsor of the event, Land Rover Long Island. Thanks also to sponsors TD Bank, Abyssinian Development Corporation, Chartwells, Thompson Hospitality, Meadowbrook Polo Club, The Albanese Organization, Doshi Diagnostic Imaging, Dr. Magdy Shady, Smithtown Hunt, SUNY College at Old Westbury Alumni Association and Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf, LLP.

From now on, those looking to work in Westbury’s Recreation Department will undergo more rigorous scrutiny.

The village code was amended at a recent board meeting to require that all new village parks and recreation department employees that work closely with children take background and toxicology tests. While new CDL operators underwent background and drug and alcohol testing, no such system was in place for hires at the recreation department.

After a year of filling the role as an interim, Mary Lagnado was appointed permanent superintendent of the Westbury Board of Education effective July 1, 2013.

The Carle Place High School Varsity Field Hockey Team recently won first in the Dowling College Tournament. The team beat Sayville, Harborfields, Comsewogue, and West Islip to get to the Finals vs. Rocky Point.  The final game was tied at the end of regulation time, but the team won in overtime on Shannon McGuinness’ goal and the outstanding goal keeping of Lydia Rice.

Deidree Golbourne has been running track and field all four years she has been at Westbury High School. Her passion for the sport comes from knowing that “you can put your all into it. It’s not a team sport where you have to depend on other people. You get out as much as you put into it.”

Golbourne is also seeded fourth in the state for discus throwing. She says that when she initially picked up discus her freshman year, she wasn’t a fan.
