Early morning on Jan. 31, a family experienced a life-changing – and life-saving – event as Nassau County police officers and ambulance medical technicians brought a newborn baby back to life in Westbury.
The county’s Third Precinct said that Officers Cooper and Atkin responded to a call regarding a newborn baby at a Westbury home on Roman Avenue.
When officers arrived on the scene, a 40-year-old woman was holding her newborn boy, who lay motionless and breathless at the time.
The two officers performed CPR on the baby when Ambulance Medical Technician Roper of the Emergency Ambulance Bureau arrived, cutting the baby’s umbilical cord and continuing life-saving measures as the newborn baby was being transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. While en route to the hospital, the baby began crying and breathing on its own. The mother, who was transported in a separate ambulance, was listed in satisfactory condition after arriving. The newborn was in stable condition as well.
“It kind of hits you hard after that, when it’s done and over with, what just happened. It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Officer Atkin.

The show must go on – and starting this fall, Westbury residents should have plenty of shows from which to choose.
With a nearly decade-long dream coming to fruition, developer Cyrus Hakakian of Roslyn and his partners plan to part the curtains for the multi-purpose Westbury Performing Arts Center sometime this fall.

Recently, members of the Carle Place women’s track and field team, the National Junior Honor Society and Girl Scout Troop 3096, as well as other community residents, helped promote Relay for Life by painting Carle Place purple. “Paint the Town Purple” is an initiative to spread the word about Relay for Life and pump up the community’s excitement since the event is only weeks away.
