Police: Three Elderly Women Held at Gunpoint in Westbury

Man followed woman into home, demanded jewelry, cops say

Following a string of residential burglaries and an increased police presence in the Westbury/Carle Place area, the Third Squad is investigating a burglary on Jan. 10 where three elderly women were held at gunpoint for their jewelry, police said.

Nassau County detectives said the burglary occurred around 2 p.m. when a white male, approximately 50 years old, entered an unlocked side door at a residence on 5th Avenue. Police said the suspect followed an 83-year-old female visitor into the home and confronted her, along with a 90-year-old woman and an 86-year-old female, who were already inside the home. The suspect displayed a handgun, took jewelry from a jewelry box and fled the scene in a gray, four-door Honda, said police.

Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro, as of Jan. 13, said the investigation is ongoing and described the incident as “a crime of opportunity,” but one unrelated to recent burglaries involving home robberies and the elderly on the south shore, police told Cavallaro.

Cavallaro noted that police have gathered evidence, which may assist in the investigation, but could not divulge specifics. The suspect is described as having a medium to heavy build, approximately 6 feet tall, some gray hair and wearing a gray sweatshirt.

No injuries were reported at the scene. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the crime to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are confidential and all callers will remain anonymous.

Budgets Pass In All Three Districts For Upcoming Year

By a 1263 to 789 margin, voters approved the Westbury School District budget for the 2012-13 school year.  Dr. Pless Dickerson was re-elected  and  Mr. John E. Simpkins was elected   to the board of education.

Carle Place School District’s budget, with 713 votes in favor and 336 votes against, also passed. Joe LuCurto was elected to the board of education.

The East Meadow School District’s voters supported the upcoming school year budget with 2,033 votes in favor and 790 votes opposed. All three board of education incumbents were re-elected.

The show must go on – and starting this fall, Westbury residents should have plenty of shows from which to choose.

With a nearly decade-long dream coming to fruition, developer Cyrus Hakakian of Roslyn and his partners plan to part the curtains for the multi-purpose Westbury Performing Arts Center sometime this fall.
