Beaumont Jefferson to Be Sworn In July 16

Westbury Village Mayor Peter I. Cavallaro announced that he has selected Beaumont Jefferson to fill the board vacancy created when he was elected mayor in April of this year.

“My main criteria for filling this important position was to find the best possible candidate who shares our vision for Westbury’s future, and someone who is truly dedicated to the village and our residents,” said Cavallaro. “Beaumont Jefferson has shown himself to be an outstanding community leader. He has proven, through his service in leadership positions within the community, that he is committed to making sure that the needs of Westbury and our residents are met.”

At a special meeting June 24, the Westbury Board of Education voted 6-0 in favor of absolving a $325,000 tax lien against Bethel United Pentecostal Church. The unanimous decision came just days before Bethel’s temporary stay was set to expire.

The lien was comprised of penalties, interest and fees accrued by Bethel during the four-year period it took to settle a change in zoning claim inherited 11 years ago. When Bethel purchased the Jericho Turnpike property from Thomas Kontogiannis in 1998 the site the church currently sits on was farmland with an agricultural assessment but, because a change occurred before the eight-year mandated timeframe, a state-instituted tax rollback was implemented.

Congratulations to 16-year-old Robert Wu of Westbury for his award winning performance in the 18th annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run, which was held in Eisenhower Park June 11.

Robert completed the 3.107 mile course in 18 minutes, 59 seconds, earning the second place award in the 15-19 age group.

Local runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes are cordially invited to join in the fun on Sunday, July 12, for the 6th annual “Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run/Walk.” The event will once again be starting and finishing at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School, on Central Park Road and Southern Parkway in Plainview, with the starting horn sounding at 9 a.m.

The net proceeds of the 2009 event will go to benefit the Plainview/Syosset Scholarship Fund for local students considering a career in a medically related field, and to support emergency facilities at Plainview and Syosset Hospitals to better serve patients. Dr. Alan Mensch, senior vice president of medical affairs for Plainview and Syosset Hospitals, will serve as the director of the event, and race management will be by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC), with J.P. Latkovic of TriandDuIt Multisport handling the finish line timing and scoring chores using the “AMB” computerized timing system.
