Letter: Senator Hannon’s annual Food Drive to benefit INN

These past several years have been difficult times for many New Yorkers hit hard by the national and regional recession. Unfortunately, many of our neighbors suffer in silence, and must turn to food banks, pantries and soup kitchens. Now, however, the food banks are struggling to provide enough food and supplies for those in need, and can really use our help.

I am pleased to announce that I am sponsoring my annual Food Drive to benefit the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN), who will be distributing all that is collected to the needy this season. I have partnered with several grocers and others throughout the Sixth Senatorial District, which will serve as convenient collection centers.

It is my hope to make food collection as easy as possible, and these outstanding partners welcome your donations as well. Please consider this request when shopping this holiday season. Non-perishable food collection bins will be in the following locations:

King Kullen (206 New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Square), Key Food (153 Seventh St., Garden City), Priestley Chiropractic (81 Conklin St., Farmingdale), Waldbaum’s (1530 Front St., East Meadow), Stop & Shop (3750 Hempstead Tpke., Levittown), Waldbaum’s (702 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), ShopRite (1054 Old Country Road, Plainview), and Super Compare Foods (496 Hempstead Tpke., West Hempstead). I expect additional stores and drop off locations to be added periodically. Additionally, any donations may be brought to my Community Office (595 Stewart Ave., Suite 540, Garden City).

The summer’s storms (Tropical Storms Lee and Irene) have caused a shortage, not only due to supplies and foodstuffs being needed earlier than usual, but those farmers who generously supply fresh food to the food banks were also adversely impacted by the summer storms. Thus, this year it is especially important for those who are able to contribute any non-perishable food items to do so.

If you need any assistance, please contact my community office at 516-739-1700 and remember to visit my website (www.kemphannon.com) for up-to-date information on new drop-off locations, as well as a variety of important State programs and services. I thank you in advance for your great generosity and compassion, and my best wishes to all for a safe and healthy holiday season, and prosperity in the New Year.
