Last Friday, according to police, the victim of the robbery was exiting the hotel when he was approached by a male who demanded money. The victim complied, handing the subject his wallet with approximately $130, police said.
According to police, the victim said he was going to call 911. The subject then took the victim’s cell phone.
Police said the subject was observed going into the hotel and into Room 208. Police arrested 24-year-old Alain Bernier of Freeport for robbery in connection with the incident.
The Courtesy Hotel is eventually planned to be demolished in favor of an apartment complex to be built on the site by developer Trammell Crow Residential. On the Trammell Crow website, it states that the Alexan, as the complex will be called, is “Coming Soon.”
According to the Town of Hempstead communications department, all the approvals needed for the complex have been given up until the point the town was able and the project is in the hands of the developer and the seller of the hotel site.
Some residents of West Hempstead had lobbied the town for years to close the hotel and then to allow the sale of the hotel to the real estate developer to go through. The town eventually complied and changed the zoning for the area allowing for an apartment complex and paving the way for the sale. The hotel, though, still remains open even though an agreement between the town and the developer was reached a year ago.
