Police Searching for Information

Police are searching for information regarding a collision that left a Franklin Square man dead, Sunday, Nov. 29, 11:46 a.m. at the intersection of Commonwealth Street and Naple Avenue in Franklin Square.

According to police, 46-year-old John Deiker was operating his 2004 Honda motorcycle when an accident involving an unknown vehicle occurred.

Police believe Deiker was headed northbound on Commonwealth Street and the unknown vehicle was headed possibly eastbound on Naple Avenue. Deiker, who police believe was not wearing a motorcycle helmet, was transported to Franklin Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“At this point, we are endeavoring to locate the individual who possibly struck Mr. Deiker. We’re attempting to identify the vehicle,” said Nassau Police Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant John DeMartinis.

Police have recovered forensic evidence such as pieces of the unidentified vehicle from the scene and are trying to ascertain additional information such as the unknown vehicle’s make, year and color. They later identified the vehicle as a 1991 to 1996 Buick Century.

“We cannot establish alcohol, speed or roadway conditions as factors at this point,” DeMartinis said. “We do not believe at this time that it was a high-velocity accident.”

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Nassau County Police Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
