The West Hempstead Community Support Association Executive Board, in selecting the recipient of the “West Hempstead Person of the Year 2008,” had to look no further than Scott Jablow. For the past 18 years, Scott, his wife Janet and their two sons have lived in West Hempstead. During those years, he organized the Cathedral Gardens Civic Association with a goal to bring neighbors together to help one another and take pride in their community.
As president of the Cathedral Gardens Civic Association, Scott has worked very closely with the West Hempstead Civic Association and now with the West Hempstead Community Support Association (WHCSA). His one purpose has always been to help keep West Hempstead a desirable community. In 1995 when West Hempstead was confronted with a business that threatened the safety of the residents, it was Scott who helped galvanize the community and have the threat to our community removed.
Recognizing the residents of West Hempstead needed an organization that would encompass all of West Hempstead residents, Scott worked with a few residents and helped them establish the West Hempstead Civic Association (WHCA). In 1995, with his help and experience the WHCA was formed. Since then, every president of the WHCA and now the WHCSA has worked closely with him on issues facing the community. Each has considered Scott’s expertise and experience an asset and welcomed his input to help preserve the quality of life in West Hempstead.
Scott has added his voice and presence at many of the Town of Hempstead’s Town Board meetings. He is no stranger at the Nassau County’s Planning Commission Hearings when an issue involving West Hempstead is on their agenda.
During the years he has lived in West Hempstead, he has attended many town Zoning and Board of Appeals hearings to strongly express a position on applications for zoning variances that came before the board and would affect West Hempstead. He ardently supported variances that benefited residents and voiced strong opposition to those that would have a negative impact. He is a staunch, dependable and capable supporter of ideas and programs that benefit the residents of West Hempstead.
