A three-on-three basketball tournament, sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Alfano, for students in fifth to 12th grade, will take place today at the Dutch Broadway School in Elmont. The day is expected to include friendly competition as well as prizes and refreshments.
“This tournament was first developed to promote sportsmanship, education, family and community and I am really excited for this year’s events. So many people have pledged their support to make it possible and I know it will be a great time,” said Assemblyman Alfano.
According to Assemblyman Alfano’s chief of staff Scott Cushing, as of Monday, there were 48 teams registered to compete.
Helping Cushing plan the tournament were summer interns from Assemblyman Alfano’s office. Joe Scopelitis, Darian Bryan, Marvin Lee, Mystique Rivera and John Dieudonne have been hard at work since May, planning the tournament. For the interns, it is an opportunity to gain experience in planning and organizing a community event while helping to foster a positive experience for young people in the community.
Besides learning about teamwork at sportsmanship while playing basketball, according to Assemblyman Alfano’s office, dozens of colleges around the country have pledged their support and have donated hats and shirts. Representatives from Nassau Community College, Hofstra University, SUNY Farmingdale, New York University and others will be handing out promotional materials.
The Dutch Broadway School is located at 1880 Dutch Broadway in Elmont.
