Assemblyman Tom Alfano announced that his fifth annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place at Dutch Broadway School, 1880 Dutch Broadway, Elmont, on July 10 from 10:15 a.m. until late afternoon.
Assemblyman Alfano developed the program to provide a positive outlet for young people in the summer months and it has grown into an education and athletic day for young people going into Grades 5-12.
The tournament will take place on the refurbished Dutch Broadway basketball courts. The courts were repaved courtesy of a $40,000 grant Assemblyman Alfano helped deliver to the school. Lunch is being provided to players. The winners of each division will receive basketball medallions and prizes being donated by local businesses.
Assemblyman Alfano also announced that the New York Knicks’ Groove Truck equipped with PSPs and numerous basketball games will be on site. In addition, the U.S. Army will have their climbing wall challenge, the NY Islanders will have inflatable games, Nassau Community College will be sponsoring their “Slam Dunk” competition, the Marines are sponsoring a pull-up challenge, Hofstra University is sponsoring the 3-point shoot-out and more exciting competitions will be announced soon.
Assemblyman Alfano has incorporated higher education into the day by having major colleges and universities take part in the event. To that end, Assemblyman Alfano invited the schools to bring information and promotional materials for young people to see “what it takes” to get into colleges from Hofstra University to SUNY.
Special prizes have been provided by the New York Knicks, Liberty, NY Mets, NY Yankees, Fordham University, NY Jets, Modells, Citibank, gift certificates and a lot more, according to Scopelitis. “We have a basketball autographed by Nate Robinson and a Jets football signed by Leon Washington just for starters. There’s a lot more coming as well as a few surprises,” Scopelitis said.
To reserve team spots, students should fill out their 3-on-3 basketball forms and mail them into Assemblyman Alfano’s office- 925 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square, NY 11010, as soon as possible. Entry forms will be taken the day of the tournament up until 10:15 a.m. However, wait times for same day registration may occur. Teams will be bracketed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Sign-ups for the “Slam Dunk Competition and 3 Point Shoot-Out” will take place on the day of the tournament.
The divisions for the tournament are as follows: 5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade and 11th and 12th grade. Forms are available for prospective players by calling Assemblyman Alfano’s office at 437-5577. You can also download a form on the Internet.
