New York State Governor David Paterson unveiled a two-year, $5 billion deficit reduction plan that he believes would eliminate the state’s current-year budget gap without raising taxes, as well as institute major structural reforms. However, part of the plan includes a decrease in state aid that is filtered down to local school districts including those in Nassau County. Such a decrease in school aid could find school taxes, which are already the largest part of a property owner’s property tax bill, escalating ever higher.

Shots Fired in Elmont

Police are investigating an incident of reckless endangerment during which approximately six shots were fired following what police said was a gunfight between three male subjects.

According to police, on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. in Elmont, two subjects, armed with handguns, were involved in a gunfight with one subject, also armed with a handgun, on Crowell Street between Chowan Street and Tarboro Street.

The conference brings together hundreds of high school students from throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties to discuss business, strategies and future opportunities. Alfano was nominated to give the address by students from Elmont Memorial, Floral Park Memorial, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, Sewanhaka and Carey High Schools.
