Movie: The First Basket

This is about who scored the first basket ever for the all-rookie NY Knicks in 1946; who led them in scoring during their inaugural season, and what was the attraction to basketball for so many inner-city Jewish men from the 1920s - 1940s. A Few Good Men

This Broadway hit by Aaron Sorkin about the trial of two marines sizzles on stage. Lieutenant Junior Grade Daniel Kaffee is a Navy lawyer more interested in softball games than the case. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, he eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, thusly, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial. Chinese New Year Celebration

Held by the Chinese American Association of LI from 6 to 10 p.m. at Valley Stream Central High School, Fletcher Ave., Valley Stream. A delicious Chinese dinner is served, followed by a variety show that highlights Chinese culture, song and dance. Children and adult students will perform. Archaeological Institute of America

The LI Society of the Archaeological Institute of America will present a free lecture at 2 p.m. in Room 106, Breslin Hall, Hofstra University, Hempstead. Call 631-420-1564. Speaker: Dr. Mike Parker Pearson received his Ph.D. from Kings College, Cambridge University. He has written many publications of Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain and Europe. Program: Dr. Parker will discuss new excavations at Stonehenge that brings a much wider understanding of how it was formed as a part of a much wider complex of monuments of the Salisbury Plain. Who were the people who built it and where they came from. Recent work has led to the discovery of a large settlement of houses in the area and why the stones used at Stonehenge came from 180 miles away.

Elmont American Legion Post 1033

It’s time to highlight Elmont American Legion Post 1033 located in the impressive building on Hill Ave. Besides providing great Memorial Day parades, the post is involved in many programs that benefit the community. Port North Spring Boys Basketball

Port North is a 3-year-old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. The program currently has a combined record of 30 - 3 in the winter super league. The emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for experienced and dedicated basketball players in grades 4 through 10 who are interested in trying out for spring and AAU basketball. Stroke Life Society is a community organization of survivors and co-survivors in the pursuit of living and helping others. A stroke can be very isolating. •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs.
