Long Island residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 19 to vote on the proposed school budgets for the 2009-2010 school year. School boards and administrators have been conscious of the tough financial times facing many taxpayers in putting together budgets for the next school year. None of the local districts were able to hold the line of taxes for their budget proposals.

Some state elected officials had been discussing placing a 4 percent cap on the tax levy, but the state legislature was unable to act on the proposal. However, many local school districts have managed to keep the tax levy increases on proposed 2009-2010 budget under 4 percent.

Here is a look at the local school budget up for vote on May 19:

• The Elmont School District is proposing a $71,226,777 budget for the 2009-2010 school year. The budget calls for a 3.3 percent increase in spending over the 2008-2009 budget. The proposed budget calls for a 2.27 percent increase in the tax levy, which is the amount of the budget to be raised by taxes.

• The Franklin Square School District is proposing a $32,267,461 budget for the 2009-2010 school year. The budget calls for a 2.12 percent increase in spending over the 2008-2009 budget. The proposed budget calls for a 3.92 percent increase in the tax levy.

• Residents of the Elmont School District and Franklin Square School District will also be voting on the proposed 2009-2010 budget for the Sewanhaka Central High School District. The proposed budget for Sewanhaka calls for $150,667,035 in spending, a 1.84 percent increase over the 2008-2009 budget. The proposed budget calls for a 3.44 percent increase in the tax levy.

• The West Hempstead School District is proposing the same amount of spending as the 2008-2009 budget at $52,607,660. However, the proposed increase in the tax levy is 3.99 percent.
