Elmont Memorial High School senior Ahkeel Rodney recently earned and signed a letter of intent for a full athletic scholarship for soccer to the University of Virginia. Also a kicker on Elmont's county championship and Long Island finalist football team, Ahkeel has garnered numerous awards and has an impressive resume as a soccer player. He was named an All-Conference, All-County, All-Long Island, All-State, and All-Region player in both his junior and senior years. In 2007, Ahkeel was the Nassau County Player of the Year. In his senior year in 2008, Ahkeel was awarded with being named All-American as well as Class AA Player of the Year.
According to his coach, Patrick Corvetti, Ahkeel has been a leader in the soccer program for the past four years. Demonstrating tremendous growth and development on and off the soccer field, Ahkeel "epitomizes the phrase scholar athlete," said Corvetti. "He is a leader who forges positive relationships with his teachers and earns respect from his classmates."
Guidance counselor Coleen Lucey has had Ahkeel as a student for six years and has watched him mature into a fine young man. Ahkeel sets an excellent example for younger students who strive to be successful. With an average of over 80, Ahkeel is a strong math student and is currently taking challenging courses such as Spanish 4A and Computer Applications. "Ahkeel is a natural leader and a positive role model. Demonstrating a commitment to his school community, he is also a member of the Peer Helper program," said Lucey.
One of Ahkeel's strongest qualities is his ability to articulate his ideas eloquently. On the soccer field, he has a positive attitude as he takes on the role of leader with commitment, diligence, and the competitive spirit. Coach Corvetti recognizes that Ahkeel has "helped to transform the culture of soccer in Elmont and is a great ambassador for the Elmont school community."
Elmont Memorial High School congratulates Ahkeel Rodney on being rewarded for all of his hard work both academically and athletically.
