We are in the midst of hurricane season, which runs from June to November, and after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, it is important for everyone to be prepared, especially residents in the Town of Hempstead.

Although Long Island has been fortunate in being spared from the recent extensive hurricane damage experienced by other areas, residents should be prepared in the event that a major storm or hurricane causes property damage or power outages. Now is a great time to familiarize yourself with hurricane safety procedures.

To deal with extreme weather conditions, an Emergency Preparedness Plan has been developed and coastal evacuation routes have been established. These routes are clearly marked with round blue and white signs that mark directions to predesignated evacuation sites.

The town also has a pamphlet available that contains emergency telephone numbers, lists of suggested evacuation supplies and safety guidelines for hurricanes. Some hurricane safety tips include:

• Have at least a two-week supply of nonperishable foods and a four-week supply of prescription medicines;

• Clear yards of loose objects such as bicycles, lawn furniture and trash cans. Anchor objects (no matter how heavy or large) so that they cannot be moved by strong winds; and

• Store documents and valuables in waterproof containers and secure them in the highest possible spot to prevent damage to irreplaceable items.
