Opinion

(This letter was written by Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray in response to Senator Skelos' and Assemblyman Alfano's letter.)

Even when there is virtual unanimity of opinion on a problem, logistical and other hurdles can complicate resolving the problem. The Courtesy Hotel situation is clearly a case in point - we all agree it is a blight on West Hempstead and want it shuttered immediately. Your letter on the matter has come at an opportune time, as a hurdle in the redevelopment process for this area begs for the involvement and effectiveness of state leaders.

As I am certain you are aware, there have been discussions involving the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Trammel Crowe Residential that have focused around bringing the developer's plan into compliance with the town's zoning density requirements. Essentially, if an MTA parcel adjacent to the Courtesy Hotel could be acquired and coupled with the hotel property, there would be adequate acreage to satisfy zoning restrictions for Trammel Crowe's rental apartment development proposal.

In a recent article on the Courtesy site, the LIRR has stated that it "...is very interested in supporting transit oriented development...," which is precisely what this trackside/stationside project envisions. The assistance of the state's most powerful senator, along with the voice of a respected state assemblyman, would be invaluable in discussions with a state-chartered agency such as the MTA.

While I sincerely appreciate the heartfelt sentiments expressed in your recent letter, your active support and help are what is needed at this juncture. Please consider this a direct and candid appeal for your intercession. Will you help the community of West Hempstead and all of the parties involved to overcome the serious hurdle of acquiring the one-acre MTA parcel adjacent to the Courtesy Hotel in a manner that facilitates redevelopment of this site?

Thank you in advance for your anticipated assistance in clearing an obstacle at the state level that will have immeasurable benefits in West Hempstead. I look forward to working closely with you on this issue and celebrating together when the Courtesy Hotel is closed and torn down.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray
