The West Hempstead teen who was driving the car that had crashed on Nassau Boulevard on April 10 killing two passengers remains in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at Nassau University Medical Center.

The driver, 17-year-old Herbert Martinez, was driving at a high rate of speed when his car lost control and crashed into a pole and dumpster, police said. The passengers of the vehicle, Saul Hernandez Lopez, 17, and Quinntin McDonald, both succumbed to their injuries.

Since the teens who were students at West Hempstead High School were out of the campus for lunch, the West Hempstead School District rescinded the privilege of leaving campus.

"In terms of the open campus policy, it has been suspended for the near term and it is anticipated that the board of education will be discussing it," said Nassau BOCES executive director and school district spokesperson Mary Quinn.
