Marie Therese Brennan, 66, wife, mother, sister and friend died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on April 7, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer. Loving wife of Peter Brennan, D.D., and gracious mother of Shawna and Peter Irish of Williston Park, Matthew Brennan, M.D. of Yale University, New Haven, CT, and Caroline and James Wilkinson of Charlottesville, VA. Jubilant nanna to Madeline and Peter Irish. Daughter of the late Marguerite and Charles F. Kirby, FDNY Deputy Chief. Sister of US Navy Captain John Kirby, D.M.D. of Virginia Beach, VA, the late Margaret Elliott and Regina Higgins.
Marie was born on May 8, 1941 in the Bronx. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas School in the Bronx, the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Park Terrace NYC, Marymount College in Tarrytown, and studied at New York University, Yeshiva University and Hofstra University. Marie was a loving and caring person who, after a short career as a teacher of English in NYC junior high schools, devoted herself to her family. She taught at Herman Ridder JHS and Michelangelo Intermediate School both in the Bronx. Previously she taught in Rome, Italy, at the Marymount International School as a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
Marie met Peter, her husband, on their first day as teachers in NYC Public Schools. They were married at Holy Family RC Church in NYC, and recently received a Papal Blessing from Pope Benedict XVI for their 40th wedding anniversary.
Marie was a 36-year resident of West Hempstead. She was not only a great mother but became a dear friend and wise counselor to her children and to their many friends. She loved caring for her grandchildren and shopping for them at local sales. Marie was also a very capable poet, writer, an avid reader and a crossword puzzle fan.
Donations can be made to the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, 50 Wilson Park Drive, Tarrytown, NY 10591. Cremation was at Fresh Pond Crematory. A Mass of the Resurrection will celebrate Marie's life on April 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 24 Westminster Road, West Hempstead.
Reed A. Greninger, aged 92, who served as a Lutheran minister in the New York State and New York City area for over 50 years died after a lengthy stay in the National Lutheran Home in Rockville, MD, of natural causes.
He was born in Greenburr, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and did his master's work at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
He was pastor of Saint Paul's in Narrowsburg, NY, Saint Paul's in Dansville NY, Grace Lutheran in Brooklyn and Ascension in Franklin Square
He was preceded in death by his loving first wife, Grace and his sister Lucille Royer. He is survived by his cherished second wife, Madeline, sister Ruth Hough of Williamsport PA, his sons Edward (Mary) of Jackson, NJ and Paul (Virginia) of Santa Fe, NM, and his beloved grandchildren, Catherine and Caroline.
Reed was past president of the Lutheran New York synod and for many years was chaplin of the Franklin Square volunteer fire department.
As a minister he led by example and consensus, was a shoulder to lean on in times of trial and used his famous sense of humor to teach and to minister.
Reed also maintained a wide range of interests outside the ministry. This included building and repairing various electronic devices, building and sailing boats, all phases of photography, bowling and gardening.
In 1996 Reed relocated from New York to the Fairfax, VA area to begin a new chapter in his life with his second wife Madeline. He lived there until he entered a senior care facility a few years later.
Reed accomplished much in his time and will be greatly missed by his church, his friends and family.
