For years the abandoned Alva T. Stanforth (ATS) Junior High School sat on Hempstead Turnpike, an albatross for the Elmont community - rotting, decaying, with no use to anyone. Yet, for years, community members debated on a use for the building. That is until the Elmont Library Board, Sewanhaka Central High School District and community of Elmont came together and decided that the site would be perfect for a new Elmont Public Library.
