Assemblyman Tom Alfano made remarks recently to members of the Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead during Shabbat services about the two Israeli soldiers captured by terror groups in the Middle East. Alfano attended the services to show his solidarity and support for the State of Israel.

"I wanted to show my support for Israel and for the soldiers kidnapped by the terrorists," said Assemblyman Tom Alfano noting, "Israel is the beacon of democracy in the Middle East and is on the front lines of battling terror - we must stand with them in this war that must be won."

Rabbi Art Vernon introduced the Assemblyman by noting that "Assemblyman Alfano wanted to join us today for services to show his solidarity for Israel. We welcome him and thank him for his support." Vernon led congregants in special prayers for the quick release of the two kidnapped soldiers by Hezbollah terrorists.

Alfano outlined his support for the Israeli Defense Forces and their efforts of protecting Israel's borders. "The two soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah were doing their job. They were working in Israel and were kidnapped on Israeli soil. This was an unwarranted action and cannot be tolerated," said Alfano.

In addition, Alfano noted that hundreds of thousands of residents in the city of Haifa were living in shelters as a result of rockets being launched by terror organizations in southern Lebanon. "I've attended rallies for victims of terror and have seen the faces of the young people that it impacts. Right here in West Hempstead, I met a young girl who was a victim of the Sbarro bombing during a rally hosted by Young Israel of West Hempstead. I listened to the stories of how families are impacted by this outrage and feel strongly that we have to stand up as a nation and fight to protect democracy," said Alfano.

During the JCC service, Alfano stated that he has written to the White House to encourage President Bush and Secretary Condoleezza Rice to stand firm in their support for Israel. He added that the U.S. must send a message to terror states like Iran and Syria and punish those who fund terrorists and put innocent people in harms way. "We know who funds and supplies these terror groups. We have a responsibility to send a message that says no more - period."

Alfano concluded his remarks by asking congregants to continue to stand strong in their support for Israel. He assured them that he will stand by Israel's side and will lend his voice to those who fight terror.
