Around the same time every year as the vote for the school budgets approach, talk turns to property taxes. At budget hearings and in letters to the editor in the local newspaper, residents expressed concern about school district spending and what impact passing the school budget will have on property taxes. But in West Hempstead this spring, an anti-school budget sentiment found its way into one of the most unusual places - the parish bulletin.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and the town board unanimously adopted a blight study for the area of West Hempstead around the Courtesy Hotel. The move is seen as a step in closing the hotel. However, the entire area is in need of revitalization.
