School budgets across Long Island will be voted on next month in what figures to be a crucial day for many school districts. In recent years, some school districts have seen their proposed budgets fail, perhaps a sign that school taxes have reached a breaking point.
In the Elmont School District, residents will be asked to vote on a $61,458,087 budget, which is a 5.92 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget. Of the $61,458,087, the school district is asking for $43,267,383 from property taxes, which is a 2.86 percent increase over what the district received in 2005-2006.
The Franklin Square School District will be asking residents to approve a $28,915,655 budget, which is a 5.95 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget. Of the $28,915,655, $20,695,354 will be the amount to be raised by property taxes, a 6.37 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget.
The West Hempstead School District is proposing a $48,548,512 spending plan, which is a 6.78 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget. Out of that plan, the amount to be raised by taxes is $36,077,795, which is a 4.44 percent increase over last year's budget.
Residents of the Sewanhaka Central High School District will be asked to approve $134,022,079, which is a 5.94 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget. Out of the $134,022,079, $107,422,079 is the amount that will be raised by taxes, which is a 4.49 percent increase over last years' budget.
Residents of the Valley Stream Central High School District will be voting on a $86,775,807 budget, which is a 5.96 percent increase over the 2005-2006 budget. Of that money, $68,950,239 will be raised by taxes, a 3.23 percent increase over last year.
Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 16.
