Tremendous flames rip through a Gulf gas station located on Hempstead Turnpike and Westminister Road in West Hempstead around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, Dec. 6. The West Hempstead Fire Department was on the scene as were firefighters from several communities to extinguish the blaze. Nassau County fire marshals were on the scene to determine a cause.

Volunteers from the West Hempstead FD were lead by Chief Ken Brohm. Because of the quick action and decisions, the fire remained confined to the station and did not spread to the neighboring furniture store or St. Thomas School.

Although the fire was roaring, it was contained to the gas station. Photo by Lou Minutoli.

Additional units responded from the Hempstead, Franklin Square, Elmont, Garden City, and Lakeview Fire Departments to assist with avoiding a disaster.
